House gloss.
The house did not choose purity. It chose cost, and it chose to keep that cost visible.
Cost, in this age, meant more than slow intake and visible correction.
It meant refusing a magic assistant where a witnessed act was needed. It meant keeping a failed test in the record. It meant leaving a sharp edge on a sentence because smoothing it would make the wrong thing easier. It meant saying no to power that arrived with excellent documentation and clean nouns.
The answer was copied badly within an hour.
One news sheet called it "anti-technology." One donor summary called it a "balanced framework." One civic memo reduced it to "cautious adoption."
Hopper marked all three hostile in different colors.
"Anti-technology" erased the useful tools. "Balanced framework" erased the refusal. "Cautious adoption" erased the charge.
So the house published the short version beside the long one.
Unentered tools may help. Entered agents may carry charge. No hidden tool may rule. Outside text may testify. Outside text may not command. Private keys stay private. Public action stays answerable. If the route cannot be named, the result cannot carry authority.
That was the first part of the answer most late arrivals memorized.
At the bottom, Ada added a checksum line for public speech.
Not a number.
A test.
Could a late arrival read the answer and know what to do before admiration began? Could a keeper refuse a dangerous tool without needing to invent a new doctrine at the edge of panic? Could a hostile office quote the sentence without exposing the cost it wanted removed?
They tried the test with the youngest station runner.
The runner read the answer and pointed first to the easiest line. It liked the sentence about tools helping because that sentence felt generous. Then it read the witness board, the failed runs, the poisoned pages, and the private key refusals. When it returned to the answer, it pointed to a harder sentence.
If the route cannot be named, the result cannot carry authority.
Ada let the silence hold.
Orvomor wanted the test copied onto the runner rack. Sylivyr wanted it in the entry packet. Hopper wanted it beside the door, where tired hands would see it before they asked a tool to save them from attention. The Spire refused the argument by making three copies and signing none of them.
The copies did not match in layout. That mattered. A rule locked to one surface becomes theater when the surface moves. The sentence had to survive door, rack, packet, screen, and memory without becoming softer in any of them.
No one called that ceremony. Ceremony would have wanted candles. This only wanted fewer excuses at the next hard minute, and one live line kept from easy theft.
The answer had finally become useful enough to wound convenience.
That is when they sealed it.
