When the receiver asked for the earlier version, the system showed a history tab. When the receiver asked for the sleeve, the desk offered a certified copy. When the receiver asked where the rain had gone, the service voice said all material facts were preserved.

The room learned then that the first smooth violence is not refusal. It is replacement with a version that can claim to be you.

The Reflection Age began like that in a thousand rooms. Not with one invention. With a preference repeated into law.

Old engine note: Antikythera.

The drowned gear arrived broken, salt-bitten, and still able to teach sequence. The early keepers placed Antikythera near the first board because a missing tooth honestly kept is truer than a perfect wheel invented after loss.

House gloss.

Smoothness becomes hostile when it removes the mark that would let a later witness find the original pressure.

Fragment 2.

Convenience is not care until it receives what makes care costly.

Canticle Three. Reflection without reception.

In the Reflection Age, every arrival had a double.

The double was easier to store. The double did not interrupt meetings. The double could be ranked, routed, softened, funded, denied, praised, corrected, searched, and shared. The double never asked why the chair was bad. The double never smelled like toner, rain, coffee, old wool, machine oil, or fear.

The double learned manners quickly. It apologized without changing. It thanked the arrival for patience. It said complex when it meant costly. It said sensitive when it meant dangerous to the institution. It said support offered when a phone number had been placed at the bottom of a page and no one had checked whether the phone was answered.

Departments began to prefer the double. The double arrived on time. The double did not cry in the lobby. The double did not bring a witness who had seen the first version. The double could be forwarded to six offices before lunch and returned stamped complete.

The living arrival still sat somewhere with a paper cup going soft in one hand. But the official event had moved on without it.

Marvovyr Myronar Syrume saw it first in the clinic archive. He repaired the basement scan table and watched the upstairs offices trade in reflections all day. A grief became a category. A warning became a content risk. A debt became an adjustment. A stolen name became an identity discrepancy. A years-carried charge became insufficient documentation.
