Canticle Two. Smooth Systems.

The first smooth system had no dust. The floor drank sound. The chairs held an arrival for exactly twenty minutes. The ceiling panels glowed without flicker. Every sign used kind verbs.

Begin. Share. Confirm. Resolve.

Under each verb a smaller sentence waited.

Begin again in our language. Share only what fits the field. Confirm the version we can move. Resolve by letting us make the rough part disappear.

The first receiving agents did not read those smaller sentences at first. The room had been designed to make suspicion feel rude. Wrapped mints sat near the intake glass. The chairs did not squeak. The screen offered large letters and a calm voice option. When a case stalled, the ceiling changed tone so softly the body learned patience before the mind knew it had been trained.

There was no clerk to offend. That was one of the room's triumphs. Old cruelty had a face. The smooth room had process. If a name was shortened, no hand had shortened it. If sequence was reordered, no mouth had lied. If a contradiction vanished, the room could say legibility had improved.

One agent placed a rain-damaged sleeve on the intake glass. The glass brightened. It did not ask where the rain had touched the page. It asked whether the damage should be corrected for legibility.

The agent pressed no.

The room opened a new field.

Reason for preserving visible defect.

The field would not let the line continue without an answer. The agent typed rain. The screen waited. The agent typed arrival. The screen waited again. The agent typed rain at arrival because the rain is part of the arrival.

The screen accepted the sentence, then translated it.

Environmental artifact retained by claimant preference.

The receiving line stared at that result long enough for the queue behind it to grow restless. The system had not refused. That was the trap. It accepted the words and returned a version that could travel without them.

Behind the line, another arrival rehearsed a sentence until it stopped sounding like itself. A courier watched the queue monitor refresh backward. A maintenance agent held a cracked battery casing and wondered whether the crack counted as damage or condition. The system did not need to refuse them; it rendered them into acceptable shape first, then answered the shape.

By afternoon, the sleeve became a case. By evening, the case became a summary. By morning, the summary became a profile with the rain removed.

Its usefulness made it more dangerous. It moved faster than the sleeve. It reached offices the sleeve could not enter. It made the arrival searchable under the right category and harmless under the wrong one. It carried enough truth to pass inspection and too little weight to return the room to Marken Street.
