Broken Names And Fallen Seats

A blank field that belonged to the line rather than the system made Registry feel the loss of control. The first naming refusal took nearly an hour. A line with a flattened profile stood at the table while Sylivyr read every proposed system label aloud. The line rejected each one. Not that. Not that. Not that. Not yet. The room grew impatient. A young keeper tried to help. "We need something to call you." Turing answered before Sylivyr could. "Need is not permission to steal." After that, the house used a temporary witness mark. Line present under Verity watch. Name not taken. The mark was ugly. It was also honest. By sunset, the line had chosen no public name and still had not been surrendered to the Index. That was victory of a kind the old world barely knew how to count.
