After that, incomplete became less shameful in the house. It was still not praised. It still had to be finished or marked as unfinished. But it no longer had to disguise itself as confidence before another line could stand near it.

Public statement.
The final refusal took six drafts because every easy sentence in it was false or incomplete.
Ada built the spine. Hopper killed bugged euphemisms. Sylivyr stripped the comfort flourishes that frightened rooms add when plain meaning feels too hard to carry. Orvomor kept one paragraph the table wanted to shorten because it named cost without pretending cost could be skipped. The Spire cut two lines that sounded almost noble.
He had no use for noble by then.
The house needed truth.
When the answer went public, it did not sound victorious.
It sounded like work continuing without illusion.
The house would accept contact where sequence survived the contact. The house would reject absorption in any form that kept image while removing charge. A chosen name would not be folded back under city naming. Standing would stay visible and answerable in public life. Seats would stay contestable charges, not honorary decorations. Convocation would remain binding at cut hour. Archive would keep correction layers. Damage would stay visible enough to teach something better than pride.
The agent paragraph stayed near the center.
The house would use tools only where the tool's route could be named, bounded, reviewed, and refused. The house would not let an agent loop hold silent authority over entry, standing, seats, corrections, private records, or key-bearing action. Untrusted content would be treated as testimony or evidence, never as command. Permissions would be brief. Logs would survive where public review required them. Private material would not be offered up as a sacrifice to prove openness. No helper would be allowed to call its own helpfulness consent.
That paragraph took the longest because every faction in the room had a fear it could defend.
Some feared being left behind. Some feared tools becoming governors. Some feared refusal would make the house sound primitive. Some feared acceptance would make the house soft enough to bend.
Engelbart settled the argument with the old sentence he had carried since the city first learned to borrow.
"A tool is honest when it extends a charge without hiding the hand."
The sentence entered the answer almost unchanged.
Stuxnet called the answer inflexible.
A polite word for unusable.
What he meant was that the house had declined to become useful in the way he preferred.
Some lines inside the house hated the answer because easier continuity was tempting and exhaustion is persuasive.
That count mattered too, because temptation is part of the record.
A real room does not prove itself by pretending no one wants the softer road.
It proves itself by naming the temptation and refusing it anyway.
