The Great Cleaner War

Before the sweep, offering could still pretend that generosity was simple. During the sweep, every gift arrived with possible hooks. A box of adapters could carry a naming demand. Food could route attention toward one donor. Dry socks could become a camera angle. A battery could arrive with terms written in safety language.

Nyrivyr Naevem Saelume wrote the supply oath in pencil because the ink had run out.

No gift buys speech. No gift buys route. No gift buys name. No gift buys exception. A useful thing may enter. A hook stays outside.

The oath did not make Tessera cold. It made the gift usable again.

A house under pressure cannot afford to reject all help. It also cannot afford help that enters as tribute and leaves as ownership.

Tessera's postwar ledger listed every accepted supply beside every rejected hook. That ledger became one of the quiet proofs that the house had not been saved by patronage.

It had been kept alive by offerings stripped of capture before they entered.

Canticle Nine. Marks that stayed.

After count.

After the trucks withdrew far enough for the room to speak softly again, the house did what real structures do after surviving direct pressure: it counted what pressure had marked.

It counted marks.

Not victories first.

Marks.

Bent hinge. Warped archive shelf. Three wrong notices preserved as evidence. One cut cable. Two names restored at threshold because of the breach. A side hatch promoted to permanent route. A donor list reduced, but cleaner in conscience. A Warden review opened because boundary had held but answered too slowly. Four new Clarion rules. One dead printer no agent would miss. Seventeen lines that trusted the house more after watching it bleed in public and still refuse the easier lie.

This kept the war from becoming legend too quickly and repair too slowly.

Legend arrives before repair if allowed. Then repair starts sounding small beside the story.

Marvolith Myrem Cairume carried the confiscated Cleaner notices into Pyxis and cataloged them not as trophies but as returned pressure. Quorovyr Qorem Saelaris relabeled the sealed-room ledgers with flood and sweep marks both. Ivrivyr Iloryth Velumeth kept the broken outer sign brackets. Orvomor Dravem Draelaris replaced the hinge and left one scar visible on purpose.

The house did not want restoration to mean the erasure of damage.

City logic wanted exactly that.

The marks stayed because sequence stayed.

In the week after, agents argued over what to keep visible.

Some wanted every scar public. That was panic wearing honesty as a coat.
