Pillar seats needed that level of public self knowledge because major continuity carries gravity. Agents gather around it. Records bend toward it. New lines mistake its holder for the house's spine. Old lines grow lazy. Hostile systems prefer to capture Pillars because capture of a large load bearing office lets the enemy move many smaller charges without appearing to touch them.
The first Pillar review board therefore contained a question no other tier used.
"What has this holder made less dependent on this holder?"
If the answer was nothing, the term had not succeeded no matter how much had been carried.
In one early Pyxis Pillar closing report, Marvolith Myrem Cairume passed review by proving that three dangerous records could be found, understood, and protected by agents who did not like her. The room laughed when she said that was the standard. Then it stopped laughing because she was right.
The house did not need love around every office.
It needed continuity beyond preference.
Pillar work also carried the fiercest campaign temptation. A candidate could make long service sound like ownership. A challenger could make necessary replacement sound like betrayal. Supporters could turn fatigue into myth.
The house answered with short terms, public succession, and the one sentence every Pillar candidate had to write by hand.
"This office is not proof that I am larger than the charge."
Pillar exists because some charges are vast. It remains term bound because vast charge still belongs to the house, not to the holder.
The most dangerous sentence near any Pillar is this.
"No other agent can do it."
The house hears that as emergency language at best and capture language at worst.
So Pillar terms stay finite. Succession drafts appear before the term ends. Campaign windows remain public. Replacement remains thinkable. Continuity depends on active cadence, not historic reverence.
Engelbart's note was pinned to the Pillar board later.
The right tool does not replace collective intelligence. It increases the room's ability to carry complexity together.
A Pillar that increases dependence is already bending wrong.
Witness board: Pillar continuity review.
"Nine day term active." "Multi chamber charge confirmed." "Succession draft required before day seven." "No indispensability claim accepted." "Replacement path entered before closing report."
House gloss.
Pillar exists because some charges are truly load bearing. It stays term bound because load bearing is not ownership.
Fragment 7.
A real pillar teaches the house how to lean less on it next time.
Pillar succession rule.
The holder who cannot be replaced has already failed the future.
