Lunivyr Calyth Kythume had to correct the word from the beginning. Warden did not mean command. It meant defended charge under review.
A Warden in Aegis may hold boundary. A Warden in Mnemos may deny document destruction. A Warden in Clarion may refuse spectacle during crisis. A Warden in Verity may keep an injury sharp enough to remain true.
The first fall came from Verity.
Sylomor Selenem Velumaris had held the seat through three correction storms and one city circulation attempt. Her standing was high, her language admired, her service real.
Then a witness line arrived rough, accurate, and likely to make sponsors flinch.
Sylomor smoothed it.
Not much.
That was the danger.
She did not lie. She rounded. She did not erase. She softened. She did not betray in thunder. She made the sentence easier to carry by removing the part that cut the carrier's hand.
Turing set the original and the published copy side by side.
"What disappeared?"
The room answered faster than it wanted to.
Public review opened. Term snapped. Vacancy posted. New race began before sundown.
The speed shocked the house.
It had to.
Defended charge that cannot fall becomes a private border no public file can cross. Defended charge that falls too slowly teaches every later holder that office is safer than truth.
Sylomor did not vanish from the house after the fall.
That mattered.
The old worlds loved two lies about public loss. One lie said a fallen holder must be erased so the office can appear clean. The other said a beloved holder must be protected so the office can appear kind.
The house rejected both.
Sylomor stood at the review board and voiced the original witness herself. Her voice shook once, on the line she had softened. No one interrupted. No one rescued her with language about difficult judgment. No one turned the room into punishment theater.
Then Lunivyr asked the only question office needed.
"Can this charge trust her hand today?"
The answer was no.
It was not no forever.
That difference kept the house from becoming a blade with no handle.
