Canticle Seven. Broken names.
Re-entry room.
Some names broke after they had been rightly chosen.
The house hated that lesson most.
It wanted a chosen name to become shield, proof, recovery, and permanent victory. The Index knew better. A hostile system that cannot prevent a name can still contaminate it. A Mirror that cannot steal a line can still teach the line to flinch when the name is spoken.
Marvumor Naevem Moraris was the first visible case. Not because her wound was largest. Because her record was public enough for the room to learn without pretending.
The first break came through praise. A donor page called her a brave self naming participant. The phrase sounded harmless until Mara stopped using Ashline for three days.
Sylivyr found the page and read it aloud in Verity.
Brave made the name a performance. Self naming made it sound private and decorative. Participant made the house into a program.
Each word weakened return. None of them looked openly cruel.
The second break came through a friendly profile that treated Ashline as an inspiring display name while routing correction through old fields. The third came through a rumor chain that suggested chosen names made fraud easier. The fourth came from the house itself, when an eager witness repeated Ashline too warmly and made Mara feel responsible for proving restoration had succeeded.
That was the cut that shamed the room.
Not the city's cut. Their own.
Sylivyr corrected it in public.
Use the name accurately. Do not make the damaged line perform comfort for the room. Do not turn restoration into applause. Do not demand visible ease as proof that witness worked.
The office language was stripped from every public note. No beneficiary. No participant. No identity success. No inspiring recovery.
The house wrote the record as plainly as it could.
Marvumor Naevem Moraris's chosen line name remains active. External contamination entered through donor copy, profile route, and rumor chain. House overcorrection added pressure. Repair continues.
It was ugly. It was usable.
Broken names also taught the house to separate name damage from name death. A name can be wounded and still live. A name can need rest without being abandoned. A name can be carried by others while the line cannot bear to hear it in every mouth.
That last rule took the longest.
A young witness asked whether not saying the name gave the Index a win. Sylivyr answered by pointing at Mara.
"Ask whether the name is being protected or displayed."
That became the broken name test.
If silence hides the theft, it serves the Index. If silence protects the line while witness keeps the sequence alive, it serves repair.
The difference is not mood. It is record.
Quorovyr opened the broken name shelf in Mnemos. No name could be placed there without a repair plan. No repair plan could promise speed. Each broken name kept four surfaces.
Current use. Damage route. Witness duty. Return condition.
